The world is a pretty insane place right now. Sure, it has always been a very insane place, but there is something especially insane about the world right now. A few weeks ago, bae and I decided to salvage the little bit of what ever kind of summer this is that we have left before we have to go back to work in the fall. Bae also had a milestone ‘pandemic birthday’ & this was a gift to him, taking social distancing celebrating to a new level. Pandemic aside, being black in America has been stressful in many ways. But as I said, there is something especially insane about right now. We need[ed] a breather.
I came across Getaway House from a mom I follow on IG, Lenize. Thank you for the discount, girl! She shared her experience and I just knew it was needed. It’s unfortunate that days leading up to our arrival, I saw a video of a black man who was approached by random white men who, for whatever reason thought that he shouldn’t be enjoying the outdoors–during a 4th of July celebration, where they also were enjoying said outdoors. This black man was in the woods, with friends, minding his business and while I don’t remember details of what happened in that video, I do remember he was in the woods. minding his effin business. Now here we were, in Texas, trying to go into some woods to have a little getaway from this exact craziness, yet here was another reminder that there are few places black people can go without being harassed by that one entitled Caucasian.
But anywho — with that small but lively inhibition, we headed to Navasota where the cluster of cabins were located. I’m very happy to say that once we got there, all my small worries faded (aside from a solid 5 mins where we heard very distinct GUNSHOTS, but I decided to just accept the fact that I was really in the woods where people go hunting). The cabin was extremely warm and inviting and being deep in nature really allowed me to destress, disconnect as well as reconnect.
Here’s a little video diary of our Getaway:
This is one of many ways I suggest you take care of yourself. It may not be in the form of a cute cabin in the woods, but disconnecting from the insanity of this world and reconnecting with yourself in a setting with no distractions is valuable beyond what you can realize prior to doing so.

If you’re interested in booking a Getaway, please use a discount. They’re a bit pricey but very worth it. They provided me with a referral link that’ll give you $25 off your first booking.
