Today, I edited my very first makeup unboxing, review and try on. To be honest, it’s almost a joke that I did this because I barely own makeup brushes. Look at me, a clown. But anywho – more importantly, it is also the start of my Black-owned video series, BuyBlack. I have a few people and businesses that I’ve patronized that I’m really proud & excited to share on my blog and talk about. Since the murder of George Floyd, a friend & I have been in near constant conversation about small changes we want to intentionally make in our personal lives. We’ve been back & forth in message threads sharing every Black-owned EVERYTHING we can find.
There are moments where I think, “it sucks that it took this awful year to make something like this happen” but I remind myself that the consciousness and self-awareness that I have been thrown into this past year of my life has been deeply profound and despite how I feel, on time. I figured, what better way to share than through my means of expression – blogging and video.
I am now, I guess you would say, hyper-aware about investing my money into a community & businesses that an entire global society is made to work against, owned by people who look just like me. It is my hope simply that these videos shed light on the many amazing Black, Brown + POC-owned businesses you may not know of but also bring awareness to others of the countless issues the Black community faces, especially while trying to make a living.
